Will Rogers Theatre is an iconic Route 66 landmark in Oklahoma City

Welcome to Western Avenue –
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Along this stretch of historic Route 66, Western Avenue tells a story that is still being written.

The Mother Road came to Western Avenue in 1930, when Route 66 was realigned from the original alignment along Classen Boulevard. It veered up Western Avenue from NW 23rd Street to NW 39th Street, where it turned to the east. That alignment lasted until 1933, when the “Beltline” bypass traveled south from Britton Road along Western to NW 39th Street. This alignment would last until 1953, replacing the portion of Western from NW 23rd to NW 39th.

Once a key corridor for travelers making their way west, Western has become one of Oklahoma City’s most established and beloved destinations—where legacy businesses, local flavor, and modern energy all exist side by side.

Home to iconic Route 66 landmarks like the Will Rogers Theatre (where the Route 66 Centennial Monument stands and makes a meaningful selfie stop) Western also boasts premier shopping and a fulsome assortment of both buzzy and tried-and-true Oklahoma City dining destinations.

As you explore, you’ll find that Western Avenue is more than just a collection of businesses—it’s an experience built over time, a bridge between Oklahoma City’s storied past and dynamic present.

WELCOME TO OKC’S ORIGINAL RESTAURANT ROW

Hungry? Western Avenue has been known for decades as Oklahoma City’s Restaurant Row. From long-standing favorites to new concepts, the variety here reflects both the city’s growth and its roots.

For decades, this district has been home to creative and locally owned restaurants that built their reputations on consistency, quality, and community.

The Metro Wine Bar & Bistro, a cornerstone of casual fine dining in OKC since 1988, serves French-inspired continental cuisine in a comfortable, refined setting. Featuring an extensive wine list, the Metro is a prime destination for power lunches, cozy dates, and countless special occasions.

Near Western’s northern Restaurant Row terminus, the venerable Tokyo introduced sushi and sashimi to Oklahoma City palates in 1987, igniting an enduring craze. It remains an institution among several Western Avenue Japanese establishments. Standouts include the celebrated and ever-popular Sushi Neko (adjacent to Will Rogers Theatre) and its sister teppanyaki restaurant, Musashi’s, located just across the street. Relative newcomer Jinya Ramen Bar dishes out small plates, sushi rolls, and several ramen variations in a modern izakaya setting.

Just down the block from Sushi Neko, Rococo is among Oklahoma City’s best restaurants of any genre, with a convivial atmosphere and friendly, unpretentious service. Beloved chef Bruce Rinehart, a Maryland native, brands it as an East Coast seafood restaurant (his crab cakes are the stuff of legend, but don’t stop there). The varied menu offers several creative (and affordable) small plates. The weekend brunch is a celebration.

Perhaps no conversation about Western Avenue—and Oklahoma City—dining would be complete without mentioning the legendary Coach House (now The Hutch). This long-time French-inspired Nichols Hills institution brought seasonal, local ingredients to Oklahoma City plates long before the farm-to-table dining trend emerged.

Founded by former Metro owner and restaurateur Chris Lower, the restaurant was later bought by chef Kurt Fleischfresser, who started a culinary training program at Coach House. Decades after, Fleischfresser—among Oklahoma City’s most admired chefs—is responsible for helping launch the careers of multiple chefs de cuisine in OKC and beyond.

The original Coach House has evolved into a modern tavern known as The Hutch, where Fleischfresser’s team serves up a sophisticated assembly of rustic-inspired comfort dishes, fine wines, and creative cocktails.

Comfortably cool Flip’s started as a wine bar serving great pizza, appetizers, and Italian dishes in the 1980s and has evolved into a restaurant with a great wine and beer selection. Serving late, this classic happy hour and see and be seen hangout has rotating dinner specials and is known locally for its exquisite soups.

Further up Western, eclectic The Crown is a chef-driven fine-dining experience with a thoroughly bohemian ambiance. Chef Eric Smith, who visits diners and talks up the nightly specials, plates up inventive yet unfussy dishes in an intimate dining space. USA Today named it one of America’s Restaurants of the Year in 2025.

SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP

Shopping on Western Avenue is just as intentional. This isn’t big-box retail—it’s personal. Locally owned boutiques, design showrooms, antique shops, art galleries, and specialty stores line the road for miles, offering a curated shopping experience. It’s the kind of place where you can take your time, discover something unexpected, and support businesses that have shaped the district for years.

Among many options, Classen Curve, just south of Grand Boulevard on Western, stands out. This open-air upmarket shopping center features distinguished clothiers for men and women and a large variety of upscale local and international retailers. Further north, Nichols Hills Plaza is known for its array of luxury boutiques and has been a mainstay for up-market retail in OKC for decades.

Western Avenue is also one of Oklahoma City’s most distinctive destinations for home and interior design, drawing homeowners, builders, and designers from across the region. The corridor is lined with locally owned showrooms and specialty stores that focus on craftsmanship, quality materials, and timeless style. From custom cabinetry and flooring to lighting, rugs, and curated décor, these businesses offer more than products—they provide inspiration.

ROCK AND ROLL AND MORE

The charm of Western extends beyond upscale dining and shopping. It’s also been an important entertainment district in Oklahoma City since the 1960s.

The legendary VZDs, a former drug store turned live music showcase and restaurant and bar, once ruled the roost for up-and-coming live music in OKC. Famously, the venue (now shuttered) hosted the Red Hot Chili Peppers among many other musical luminaries. It’s currently between concepts and ownership, but look for it to come back soon.

For a blast from the past (and still going), check out the former post-Depression era beer taverns Cock of the Walk and Sipango. Both destination dive bars, they have graduated from serving only low-point beer during Prohibition to full-service bars. Prepare to have a good time.

Right next to Cock of the Walk, the fantastic Guestroom Records is a Central Oklahoma destination for new and used records and CDs.

If you’re in the mood for live music, a lively patio scene, and an extensive beer selection, 51st Street Speakeasy is probably your jam. Located just a half block west of Western, “the Speak” is a great place to check out local, regional, and nationally touring indie bands.

NEIGHBORHOOD VIBES

Western Avenue is deeply connected to the neighborhoods that surround it—serving Crown Heights, Nichols Hills, and several prestigious and historic communities nearby. With a residential population of more than 50,000 just beyond its storefronts, this district isn’t just a destination—it’s part of daily life.

That’s what makes Western Avenue different. It’s where history isn’t preserved behind glass—it’s lived out through businesses that have stood the test of time. It’s where new visitors experience the charm of Route 66 while discovering something entirely new. And it’s where Oklahoma City continues to grow without losing its soul.
